June 10, 2020

Dear Parents and Guardians:

This letter provides updates regarding our return-to-school plans for the fall, along with a few reminders of some upcoming summer dates.

Once again, thank you for your flexibility and understanding as we transitioned to remote learning in the fourth quarter of the 2019-20 school year and in our summer programming. As we look to next year, Warren Township High School is actively planning for multiple school reopening scenarios. The process of identifying the status of reopening depends greatly on the direction we receive from the governor, the Illinois State Board of Education, and the Illinois Department of Public Health. This direction allows us to determine which scenarios are most likely for us and the necessary conditions for returning to in-person instruction.

We anticipate receiving updated and revised guidance from the state this summer. We will most likely not make a final determination on our reopening status until a few weeks prior to the start of school, as the guidance we receive is subject to change based on the status of COVID-19 statewide.

To facilitate reopening either in-person or remotely, the district has established several Pandemic Preparedness Advisory committees to identify the operational, academic, support, and district-wide aspects of a return to school. The overarching focus of these committees’ work is ensuring all decisions made are focused on student, staff, and visitor wellness, as well as maximizing educational opportunities for our students. Although we hope to be able to welcome our students back into the classroom soon, we are also working to further develop remote teaching strategies and skills with our staff over the summer in case eLearning is the best option to start the school year.

Since the start of the stay-at-home orders in March, our school buildings and athletic fields have been closed. All summer athletic and extracurricular activities are currently on hold. We will communicate to the WTHS community if this changes.

A huge congratulations goes out to our WTHS seniors, who have finished their high school careers under extraordinary circumstances. We look forward to honoring the Class of 2020 on July 12 at our Almond campus drive-through celebration. Senior students and parents, please refer to Mr. Parrott’s June 1 communication regarding this alternative graduation plan.

WTHS will host drive-thru curbside pick-up and drop-off of any remaining school items for all students on June 17-18. This is the opportunity for all students to stop by to pick up or return any items. This will occur at both campuses. Please see the district website for the assigned times for students.

As our community works through this unpredictable time, we are committed to working with you to provide learning opportunities and supports for our students. Please continue to follow guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other governmental agencies when it comes to preventing the spread of illness in our community.
