eLearning Extension, Calendar and Testing Information, April 1, 2020

April 1, 2020

Dear Parents and Guardians:

On Tuesday, March 31, Governor Pritzker officially extended the suspension of in-person instruction. WTHS will be implementing eLearning minimally through April 30.

While eLearning is certainly not the same experience for students as when they physically attend school, it is a great tool to help us deal with school closures, including the unprecedented closures the coronavirus has brought to our community. As much as we miss our students and staff, having people safe at home with their families will no doubt help us in our efforts to minimize exposure to the virus.

Important Calendar Updates as of April 1, 2020
Information regarding some important dates and planning, which may be impacted by our remote learning, are listed below. The district will be closed (no eLearning) on Friday, April 10. This was and continues to be a day of no school on our district calendar.

eLearning Planning Days
As part of the transition to extended eLearning, the Illinois State Board of Education is allowing school districts to use up to five eLearning planning days to help teachers develop and implement meaningful lessons for students during this extended eLearning period. There will be no required attendance check in or daily email to students on these days.  Students will be responsible for catching up on coursework. Students may continue to email teachers with questions about past assignments on these days, but no new eLearning assignments will be provided.

WTHS will have an eLearning planning day approximately every two weeks. The first date is scheduled for Monday, April 13. Additional eLearning planning days are the following:

  • Monday, April 27 - Planning Day
  • Monday, May 11 - Planning Day (if eLearning is still in effect)
  • Friday, May 22 - Planning Day (if eLearning is still in effect)

We have and will continue to update our calendar on the district website to reflect eLearning days and eLearning planning days.

Academic Requirements and Assessments
Due to the unfortunate interruption to our school year, the Illinois State Board of Education has also received a waiver from the federal government on a number of academic requirements for students. The state board has subsequently canceled some assessments that were scheduled for the second semester. These include: 1) the administration of the PSAT9/PSAT10/SAT assessments, 2) the Dynamic Learning Maps Alternate Assessment, and 3) the constitution test for students currently enrolled in government classes and graduating seniors.

Students and teachers will receive separate communications from College Board regarding continuing with alternative plans for Advanced Placement (AP) tests.

Activities and Events
For the last several weeks, we have been monitoring the many activities and events the district hosts, which unfortunately may be postponed or canceled. If or when cancellations and/or postponements on specific district activities occur, we will communicate them in separate messages.

As our community works through this unprecedented time, we are committed to working together with you to provide remote learning opportunities for our students.

Please continue to follow the guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other governmental agencies. Stay safe and healthy!

John P. Ahlgrim, Ed.D.
